Tamborilero celebrates the Afro-Uruguayan tradition of Candombe music and the invaluable contribution of the African diaspora and their descendants.
Uruguayan-born, singer-songwriter Valeria Matzner has demonstrated an affinity for bridging the iconic roots, rhythms, and melodies of South America with her own ever-evolving and exploratory stylistic eclecticism.
Anima, Matzner’s first solo album, garnered great national and international reviews and has been honored with a Global Music Award.
Now, with measured and matured songwriting chops and a new-found perspective on her Uruguayan heritage, the Montevideo native takes a focused deep-dive into the roots of her musical soul on her second solo album, Tamborilero (Lulaworld Records 2023) has been honored with a 2024 Graffiti award nomination for Best Candombe Fusion Album of the Year.
“...Valeria Matzner, the Uruguayan-born singer-songwriter now calling Toronto home, takes us on a musical escapade that elegantly fuses Uruguayan candombe with the cool vibes of contemporary jazz. It’s like she’s painting a vibrant musical canvas that’s both nostalgic and refreshingly new” - Iliana Cabrera - World Music Central
